Ornamental Onion, Persian Onion, Drumstick Allium Allium aflatunense
This is a tallish allium with dense spheres (10 cm, 4", across) containing hundreds of pale pinkish violet star-shaped flowers with deep purple veins.

Strap-like grey-green leaves die back when plants flowers in May and June. August brings seeds, which will come true if sown. See Growing Allium from Seed.

Allium aflatunense is from Central Asia and like most Alliums it prefers slightly alkaline well-drained soils and full sun but it will tolerate any soil type and some shade, although you might get root rot in very heavy clay soils.

It has given rise to A. 'Mother of Pearl', A 'Purple Sensation', A. 'Gladiator' and A. 'Lucy ball'. It is sometimes mistaken for Allium hollandicum.
