Star of Persia, Allium christophii, Downy OnionAllium cristophii
The biggest and brightest Allium of them all has nearly a hundred shining star-shaped flowers - each just 1-2cm across - formed into giant metallic inflorescences or flower heads some 20cm (8") wide.

Long, blue-grey, strappy leaves begin to die back before flowers appear which come September will turn into huge sculptural seed heads. Height is 60cm (24") - quite short. A tall dark version comes in the form of Allium 'Firmament', a hybrid of Cristophii and Allium atropurpureum, while, Globemaster (A. cristophii x A. macleanii) is perfectly spherical and violet.

It is a perfect fit for a hot mediterranean garden, being both drought and heat tolerant, and, it looks fantastic with drought-tolerant grasses and flax, especially the cool metallic, Silver Spear (Astelia chathamica).

Allium cristophii can only be propagated from seed, and it will self seed.
